Origin / History

Kalighat Society for development Facilitation (KSDF) is not-for-profit organization, located in south kolkata, west Bengal, India has been working for over 19 years with organization's goal of Poverty alleviation through livelihoods & economic development, ensuring basic rights to children, education, health security, gender and social equality for the marginalized sections of the society. Mrs. Gitanjali Satapathy, Founder & present Secretary of the organization started social development works in the year 1997 by running of coaching cum creche (Day-Care services) for 14 slums and street children of marginalized working mothers.

Her voluntarily efforts to take care of the children along with educational guidance to children which helped to their mothers for freely working hours to earn money for their livelihoods. Her innovative thinking towards raising income of the poor mothers by forming Urban SHGs ,facilitate saving habits, inter- loan systems and facilitate to access micro-finance by linking with Banks for entrepreneurship development and self-reliant that motivated to form an NGO KSDF was registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act of 1961 in the year 2001.

It is involved in grassroots work in the state of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha and coverage of eight districts and reaching about more than 75000 poor families. The Organization mainly works in underserved /unreached areas of rural, semi-urban, slums of the cities and hilly tribal areas. It has independent units of the operational areas of the different districts of the above cited states. The Head quarter is near Kalighat, South Kolkata; look after the all operational units in the districts by technical & logistic support, financial management, human resource, monitoring and evaluation, liaisoning, networking, advocacy and fund raising activities.
