A Workshop on Financial Literacy, an activity under the project entitled “ Ascent: Women Led Financial Inclusion Initiative” was organized on 10.09.2016 in Jatri Nivas, Kalighat Area for the women self help group leaders by KSDF (Kalighat Society for Development Facilitation), supported by Citi Foundation. The workshop was attended by Smt.Manjushree Majumdar,Councilor as Chief Guest ,Sri Bishnu Bhagaban Pandit,Manager,Bharatiya Mahila Bank as the Guest of honour and Professor U.K. Bandyopadhyay,IISWBM, as the Chief Speaker. About 200 leaders of SHG from 42 slums were the participants for the program.
The secretary of the organization delivered the welcome address and gave a brief description of the aim and objectives of the organization and put emphasis on the empowerment of women and financial empowerment for inclusive growth which the organization has been working for last 20 years.
The President of the organization has presented the concepts and activities carried out by KSDF on financial inclusion i.e. broadening and deepening the scope of financial services and financial literacy for the marginalized community of the slum and pavement dwellers. The presentation also covered regarding Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Surakshya Bima Yojana, PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana and MUDRA Loan. Mechanism for Group Savings and Individual Savings at Bank are also highlighted in the presentation.
The Chief Guest, being women, highlighted women’s power and economic empowerment is the key for growth and development. She also gave high esteem to the Chief Minister of West Bengal and Icon for women due her dedication and commitment. She was very enlightened by the activities of KSDF as it is working for the cause of women and put emphasis to broaden/spread the activities to different areas of the city.
The Official from Bharatiya Mahila Bank appreciates the endevours of KSDF for facilitating savings and loan products of the Bank to develop micro-enterprise of women. He has also explained the loan procedure of the bank how it is built on recurring deposit of the savings product. He expressed that poor women are definitely bankable. But lack of information and guidance regarding practices of savings and credit result in women taking wrong financial decisions; this stands in the way of their empowerment.
The Professor of Calcutta University delivered his presentation in story telling mode regarding the developing a perspective and economic behavior of the 2nd richest person of the world, living a simple life and high thinking.
In the second session of the workshop, the women leaders were divided into four groups and presented their views regarding the workshop. The leaders felt that savings and savings at bank is the theme of the workshop and expressed that they would like expand the economic movement in their respective area with the technical support of KSDF.
The workshop was ended with a vote of thanks by Mr.B.N. Banerjee, the Treasurer of the organization.
